The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is based on a manga written by Yasutaka TsuiTsui and illustrated by Moyoco Anno. The show aired in Japan on the WOWOW network and was later licensed by ADV Films and Funimation Entertainment, who brought it to the West in 2006.
The two of them form a relationship that is rooted in a friendship that develops between two lonely people. The movie unfolds in a series of comic-book style vignettes as their adventures through time are revealed.
Makoto is a senior in high school. She has a boyfriend, but he is a complete loser who is not prepared to be in a relationship with her. Makoto gets in trouble at school for her alternative lifestyle. She has no time for boys. She takes the train to school every day and then, without any warning, hops on a time machine and is gone.
Makoto is the most popular girl at her school with gorgeous blue hair, and lives a charmed life. She can run at lightning speed, time travel to anywhere at any time she pleases, and can communicate with the dead. She lives with her widowed mother and her two younger sisters. Makoto is a complete science nerd. She studies every science subject she can, but she is also a perfect student. She majored in chemistry, and is always the first one to volunteer to teach someone in her class how to do something.
It turns out that Kei had just come through a time portal from the Middle Ages. He has a job as a wandering musician. He agrees to keep an eye on Makoto while she is in this time period. Kei spends his days taking her on adventures and finding out more about her.
Makoto is rescued by a young man named Kei at the train station. Kei is a time traveler. He did not know how he got to her time, but he knows he had to rescue her. Kei is a talented musician and plays the guitar for his soul. He is also an extreme loner and lives in a small, rundown apartment with no family, friends or relationships. He is so lonely that he has a hard time speaking to people.
